UPPER SCHOOL

Where Students Grow in Confidence, Character, and Capability

Grades 5-8

At Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School, our Upper School experience is intentionally designed for the unique needs of middle school learners. Students in Grades 5–8 are challenged academically, supported personally, and inspired to grow through a program that blends strong relationships, innovative learning, and faith-filled formation.

Through our team-based model, hands-on learning, and whole-child approach, students build the skills they need for success in high school and for life.

Our Team-Based Academic Model

Upper School students learn within two collaborative learning communities:

  • Blue Team – Grades 5 & 6

  • Gold Team – Grades 7 & 8

Students remain within their team structure for two years, creating continuity, confidence, and meaningful relationships with teachers and classmates. This model helps students feel known, supported, and connected during these important transitional years.

Dedicated Teachers, Deeper Learning

Each Upper School team is guided by a dedicated group of educators who work closely together to truly know each student and support their growth academically, socially, and spiritually. This collaborative model allows teachers to communicate regularly, personalize instruction, and create a connected learning experience where students feel both challenged and supported.

In Grade 5, students work with both a Humanities teacher and a STEM teacher, with the school day intentionally divided between the two. This structure provides a supportive transition into Upper School, helping students build strong relationships, develop organizational skills, and gain confidence across subject areas.

In Grades 6–8, students continue within a team-based model that encourages greater independence while maintaining consistent support from their core teachers.

Our Humanities Team works side-by-side to connect English Language Arts and Social Studies, focusing on the natural relationship between literature and history. Through novels, writing workshops, discussion, historical inquiry, and research-based projects, students explore how stories and historical events shape one another. This approach helps students grow as thoughtful readers, confident writers, and curious learners who can understand different perspectives and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

Our STEM Team works in close collaboration to connect mathematics and science, helping students see how these subjects work together in meaningful ways. Through problem-solving, hands-on experiments, data analysis, and inquiry-based projects, students discover how mathematical thinking supports scientific understanding and how science brings real-world context to math. This approach helps students grow as logical thinkers, confident problem-solvers, and curious learners who are prepared to tackle real-world challenges.

Our Theology Teacher plays an essential role in forming the whole child. Students deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith while learning to reflect thoughtfully, serve others, and make values-based decisions. Faith formation is woven into daily life, helping students grow in compassion, empathy, and purpose.

Our Approach to Learning

We believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process.

That is why our Upper School program blends research-based teaching practices with innovative, hands-on experiences that make learning meaningful and memorable. Students participate in project-based learning that encourages creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem solving, while strong academic instruction ensures mastery of essential skills and concepts.

Traditional classroom teaching is enhanced through the thoughtful use of digital tools and blended learning strategies that support different learning styles and allow students to work at their own pace when appropriate. Collaboration is also a key part of the student experience, as learners work together to share ideas, communicate effectively, and grow as leaders.

Learning in Action is a key part of this experience. In school, students participate in interdisciplinary, applied learning projects that connect classroom concepts to the real world. At home, students complete one meaningful project each trimester in core subject areas to reinforce skills, build independence, and encourage ownership of learning. Throughout the year, students also curate a Digital Portfolio where they reflect on their progress, showcase accomplishments, and demonstrate readiness for high school.

This dynamic approach helps students build curiosity, confidence, independence, and resilience, preparing them not only for high school, but for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Arts Block: Explore Creativity

Every Upper School student participates in our rotating Arts Block, where students experience music, theater, and visual art each year.

This trimester-based program allows students to explore different creative disciplines, discover talents, build confidence, and express themselves in meaningful ways.

Advisory Program: Every Student Known

Middle school is a time of tremendous growth, and every student benefits from having trusted adults who know them well. Our Advisory Program is designed to ensure that each child feels supported, connected, and valued throughout the Upper School years.

Students meet regularly in both whole-group and small-group settings where they focus on important life and learning skills such as organization, study habits, goal setting, friendship, communication, and personal growth. Advisors help students navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and build confidence during these important developmental years.

Just as importantly, Advisory creates a safe and welcoming space where students feel seen, heard, and encouraged. By building strong relationships and providing consistent guidance, the program helps prepare students for a smooth and successful transition to high school and beyond.
